How I tune a Midsection - by Kate Dudek of www.BassandTenor.com
Kate grew up in a musical family in Regina, Saskatchewan. In addition to tenor drumming, she sings and plays several other instruments. Her affiliation with the pipe band world began at the age of 16 when she was invited to play tenor drum for the City of Regina Pipe Band (Grade 2). She later played with the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band (Grade 1), and she was a member of their World Champion midsection and drum corps in 2007.
A Professional Engineer by day, Kate's combined engineering and musical knowledge has led her to explore in much depth the intricacies of tenor drum tuning and unified corps playing - specifically from a melodic and chord-based perspective.
Kate is currently the bass and tenor instructor for the Paris Port Dover Pipe Band organization, which has competitive bands in grades 3, 4, and 5 and performs at many local parades and events.
This 6000-word document, written in 2006, provides a strategy for tuning tenor and bass drums.
